QUESTION: How did you feel when you got the role of Racer X?
MATTHEW FOX: I had to wait a long time before I found out that I got the role. It was like one of the longest waits of my life. Five weeks I waited so, I met the directors Larry and Andy, then I read the script, and then I came back to Los Angeles and worked with Larry and Andy a bit on the material, and then I waited five weeks, which was tough. But, it was worth it. The day that I got the phone call was a really exciting day, and I remember it very specifically. I really, desperately wanted to be a part of this film, and that was for many different reasons, but I was really excited.
QUESTION: How was it to see all the preparation that went into this project?
MF: Oh, that was a really exciting day for all of us. When we got to Berlin, and we came to the production offices we walked into this room. It was just four walls covered with digital imagery and artist renderings. And so, suddenly just the world that Larry and Andy were creating was there for us to look at. I remember leaving that presentation of all that material just feeling like this is going to be so much fun, and I’m so excited and happy to be a part of it.
QUESTION: How fun is it to do something you can enjoy with your family?
MF: Well, that was one of the big reasons. That was something that’s made this very special for me. Larry and Andy, the first meeting with them they said, “You know, we want to make a family movie. We want to make a movie that our nieces and nephews can see and…” That, was a huge motivation for me and I think just the whole process of making the movie with them in mind, it’s really, it’s like playing with your kids. It’s like it taps into the kid in you, and that’s what this experience has been like for me.
QUESTION: Did you have to do any extra training for this role?
MF: Oh, yeah, yeah. That first phone call, when I found out I got the role, Larry and Andy were in Berlin and I was in Hawaii. So it was a twelve-hour time difference. So it was night for them and morning for me, and we were celebrating on the phone. I was like, “I’m so excited!” And they’re like, “Yeah, we can’t wait for you to get over…” Then, I think Larry said, “Hey, by the way, the suit’s going to be pretty tight.” And that was their way of warning me that I had about four months to get in shape. So, I hired a trainer and got after it. I’ve never done that before. I feel like I can keep myself in shape, but I was, like, “I got to really get after it,” and so I worked hard. Also, preparing for the fight sequences with the stunt coordinators in Berlin for six weeks was really fun. And I enjoy that kind of thing, I’m really very proud of doing those fights sequences, because I did all of it. I wasn’t doubled and proud to say that.
SYNOPSIS SPEED RACER LAKONAN MATTHEW FOX
The Matrix masterminds Andy and Larry Wachowski usher anime icon Tatsuo Yoshida’s classic 1960s-era hit into the new millennium with this family-friendly story of a young racecar driver who takes on the mysterious Racer X in a custom-made, gadget-loaded speed machine named the Mach 5.
Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is the kind of driver that every wheelman wishes he could be: a born winner whose unbeatable combination of aggression, instinct, and fearlessness always finds him crossing the checkered flag with a comfortable lead.
In Speed Racer’s mind, the only driver who could present him with any real challenge is his late brother — the legendary Rex Racer. Rex died in a heated cross-country rally known as The Crucible many years ago, and now his younger sibling is driven to fulfill the legacy that Rex left behind.
To this day, Speed Racer is fiercely loyal to family. It was Speed Racer’s father, Pops Racer (John Goodman), who designed the unbeatable Mach 5, and even a lucrative offer from racing giants Royalton Industries isn’t enough to get the young ace to break his family ties.
Upon turning down Royalton’s (Roger Allam) astronomical offer, Speed Racer makes the shocking discovery that the outcomes of the biggest races are being predetermined by a handful of powerful moguls who pad their profits by manipulating the drivers. Realizing that his career would be ruined if word of the fix gets out, Royalton vows that the Mach 5 will never make it to another finish line.
Now, the only way for Speed Racer to save the family business and beat Royalton at his own game will be to win the very same race that claimed his brother’s life so many years ago. In order to accomplish that formidable feat, however, Speed Racer will not only have to rely on his family and the aid of his longtime girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), but form a tenuous alliance with his longtime rival — the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox) — as well. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide.
