If 2020 was the year that flipped the world on its head, 2021 was the year that we got used to seeing things upside down. With “normal” thrown out the window, we embraced the unknown and championed all of the things that make each of us unique. Spotify’s 2021 Wrapped is a celebration of this — the millions of weird and wonderful ways to listen and live in a world that continues to keep us on our toes.
Spotify is today unveiling its annual 2021 Wrapped campaign and personalised user experience inspired by just that. At the same time, we’re unveiling the top artists, albums, songs, playlists and podcasts from the creators that helped soundtrack the year for more than 381 million users worldwide.
So, how did Malaysia listen this year? Here’s what we found:
Global K-Pop phenomenon, BTS, secured the spot of Malaysia’s most streamed artist for the second consecutive year. Three of BTS’ albums – BE, Love Yourself 結 ‘Answer’, and MAP OF THE SOUL: 7 – made it into the top albums of the year, while the track BUTTER, proved to be a favourite of Malaysians as it is the most streamed track of the year.
Global artists continue to perform well in Malaysia, with Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Olivia Rodrigo taking up the second to fifth positions in the top artist list. Olivia Rodrigo’s SOUR and Justin Bieber’sJustice took the top spots for most streamed albums.
Starting today, eligible users can also access their personalised Wrapped experience exclusively in the Spotify mobile app (iOS and Android). To help users commemorate the ways they have embraced the unknown and defined their own “normal”, Spotify releases new personalised Wrapped features, including –
- 2021: The Movie – A video montage of your top played songs paired with iconic scenes from cinema in a movie that’s all about you.
- Your Audio Aura – A creative mashup of your mood, tempo, liveliness, and even artist/album art to visualise your audio “aura.”
- Playing Cards – An interactive data-based game of truth and lie to discover how well you know your own audio habits and challenge a friend.
- Wrapped 2021: Blend – Tapping into the new Blend feature launched this year, see how your 2021 music taste matches up with friends, stream your blended playlist and share the results on social.
- Even more shareability – Share your Wrapped cards directly on social media, including TikTok for a limited time.
