MTV has today announced the launch of Your MTV Top 20, aiming to be the world’s most comprehensive weekly music video chart and the only one ultimately determined by fan interaction via social and digital media.
Katy Perry is the first artist to top Your MTV Top 20. Based on last week’s chart activity, Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea’s Problem held the top spot, but Katy Perry’s pop-tastic Birthday ended up landing the inaugural title. Elsewhere in the chart Little Monsters, Directions and Parawhores gave their idols, Lady Gaga, One Direction and Paramore huge gains into the Top 20, while 5 Seconds Of Summer climbed a huge 40 places to place at No. 10. Iggy Azalea is the only artist this week to have two tracks in the Top 10 while Katy Perry and Coldplay both have two tracks in the Top 20.
The Your MTV Top 20 chart will be compiled based on fan interactions with the week’s most popular global music videos from MTV’s own websites and apps, social media, and data from industry-leading music intelligence platform and Spotify subsidiary, The Echo Nest. Your MTV Top 20 will specifically leverage The Echo Nest’s “artist and song hotness” data to track popularity and trending metrics of music across a variety of sources across the web.
Each week MTV will curate a shortlist of the most played videos from more than 60 MTV branded music TV networks across 160 countries around the world. As fans view or stream these videos on MTV’s dedicated chart website, www.yourmtvtop20.com, or via third party platforms, and like, share, tweet and vote for their favorites via social media, their activity will influence the rankings of Your MTV Top 20 and ultimately define the top 20 hottest videos from around the world each week.
The chart will update every five minutes right up until the weekly publish at midday U.S. time/ 5pm UK time each Monday (1am Singapore time each Tuesday). The first weekly Your MTV Top 20 chart was published this week.
The chart website, www.yourmtvtop20.com, will be accessible in English, German, Italian, Spanish and French, with more languages to follow. It will also be fully adaptive for access via mobile or tablet and have inbuilt share and social functionality.
“Music videos are hotter than ever and fans have a huge appetite for them across MTV’s platforms,” said Bruce Gillmer, EVP, Music, Talent Programming and Events, Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN). “They’re also highly competitive via social media when demonstrating their allegiance to their favorite artists. Entry onto the Your MTV Top 20 chart will be gained through MTV’s ‘most played’ videos as programmed by our music and talent teams around the world. Your MTV Top 20 is a fantastic new vehicle for fans to interact with and view videos from MTV’s biggest global artists.”
Philip O’Ferrall, SVP, Digital, VIMN, added: “MTV is uniquely well-placed to deliver such a comprehensive global music video chart powered by social media – we’re one of the world’s most social entertainment brands with unparalleled multi-platform reach when it comes to music video content.”
Your MTV Top 20 is intended to build on MTV’s success in driving record levels of engagement with music fans via social media, including last summer’s #MTVHottest competition in the UK, which generated 166 million tweets and led to an increase of +22% in viewing across MTV UK’s music channels; and, the 2013 MTV EMA, which generated 323 million online votes and 59 million mentions via social media, a year-on-year increase of more than 600%.
