Chinese tales convey a message by way of strange characters and exciting plots. Talking animals, magic, imaginary beings, dragons, and ghosts are just a few of the elements that may be used to deliver a lesson within the plot of a historic Chinese story. Many of the Chinese legends and tales we hear today were not recorded on paper for hundreds of years, but were nurtured and kept alive simply by one generation passing the tale on to the next.
This August, 8TV brings you one such story, the legend of ‘Ghost Hunter’ Zhong Kui. Legend has it that one day Zhong Kui and his friend Du Ping traveled a long way to take part in imperial examinations. Zhong passed the examination but his title was forcefully taken by the emperor. Ashamed, humiliated and disgusted at this behavior, Zhong committed suicide at the palace gates, after which Du buried him. Zhong soon returned as ghost hunter and king of all ghosts in Hell. He soon married off his sister to Du.
One day emperor Xuanzong dreamt that one small ghost stole the purse of the imperial consort, and a bigger ghost captured the smaller one and returned the purse. This ghost was the one and only ghost hunter Zhong Kui. Soon, Zhong builds a reputation with the Chinese people as a protector from ghosts and evil spirits.
“Chinese legends are full of beautiful and fascinating stories about heroes and heroines. This show will take you on the most magical journey of teachings and lessons. You really don’t want to miss it.” Says Group General Manager of 8TV and ntv7, Ms Airin Zainul.
Starring popular Hong Kong actor Bobby Auyeung as Zhong Kui, this Chinese costume fantasy drama series will bring the mythological world of Gods and demons vividly to life. The drama concerning the ghastly ghostbuster’s extraordinary exploits boasts a fascinating cast. Don’t miss it, every Monday- Friday, beginning 1st August 2012, 8.30pm exclusively on 8TV. 8TV is also on Astro’s Channel 708.
