“Long Long Time Ago” Director Jack Neo and Casts to Meet Malaysian Fans on March 25

Directed by famous Singapore director Jack Neo, “Long Long Time Ago” is a movie depicting the changes in the life of Singaporeans when they moved from the villages to the government flats between 1965 and the early 70s. The story revolves around the story of a common family, the ups and downs they experienced,as the country continues to progress.

Other than some of the familiar faces, Director Neo had taken a bold step in engaging some new talents, including young artistes from his previous production such as Tosh Zhang and Wang Wei Liang, to participate in this movie.

A Challenge to Recreate the Old Times

“Long Long Time Ago” is a commemorative film to celebrate Singapore’s 50th Anniversary. Director Neo said his wish is for the movie to bring back the childhood memories of the senior audience and also to introduce the old timers’ lifestyle to the young.

The movie also reflected how Singapore developed from a community which mainly uses dialects, to using proper Mandarin and eventually English, and at the same time reminiscing the lost dialect language. Director Neo also incorporated many of his personal experiences, coupled with oldies as background music to recreate the scenes. Director Neo said the movie is to illustrate Singapore’s development in the past 50 years and expectations on the coming 50 years.

Last year, Neo led his crew to the heritage enclave in Ipoh for the filming. He expressed that one of his biggest challenge is to recreate the environment and atmosphere of the past era.

“It is not only the casts and their costumes, it is also crucial to get the language right. The language used during that era, in Hokkien or Teochew, is very different. The way they phrase the language and even the slang,” he added.

An Era Created by the 3 Major Races

To make the scenes more realistic and to better reflect the culture of that era, Director Neo took up the challenge to use dialects as its main language in the movie. The mix of Hokkien and Teochew, as well as Mandarin, Malay and English truly mirrors the unique multiracial community. Director Neo also invited artistes like Suhaimi Yusof, Silvarajoo Prakasam and Nurijah Binte Sahat to join the production, to create a truly harmonious multi-ethnic group to tell the story of that era.

“This movie is to bring everyone down memory lane, back to the “kampung” (village) era some 50 years ago. Not only the environment is different, the people then is different and the thinking is definitely different. There are many humorous and touching scenes, something which is suitable for all ages,” Director Neo added.
