You could almost say that Kuala Lumpur was turned a little Upside Down last night when Netflix, Inc , in a strange but exciting move, hosted by the city’s movers and shakers and members of the media at its first ever screening event in Malaysia. And boy was it an unforgettable night, tinged with 80s nostalgia. The screening was a celebration of the upcoming release of Stranger Things 3.
Stranger Things took the world by storm after its global debut back in 2016 and has since become an iconic cultural phenomenon. The brainchild of The Duffer Brothers, the first season starred Millie Bobby Brown as the mysterious Eleven, alongside Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair and Noah Schnapp as Will Byers, forming the now infamous Stranger Squad. The show was a critically acclaimed hit worldwide, with young and older viewers alike, and spawned a second hit season in 2017 which continued the adventures alongside newer characters and and equally engrossing storyline.
The Stranger Things 3 screening event saw celebrities from much loved local films which can be found on Netflix, such as Chew Kin Wah, a cast member of Crossroads:One, Two Jaga, and Adrian Teh, director of Paskal, coming together with prominent influencers, media, brand partners and some lucky super fans, decked in their wild and groovy ‘80’s best, paying homage to the nostalgia from the decade that the Stranger Things franchise inevitably evokes.
Key influencers including the likes of local songstress Daiyan Trisha, Athisha Khan, and Yaya Zahir, along with Arwind Kumar, Zhafran Zukifly, Nabil Mahir, Fiqrie Dahari, Sheryl Ng and Desmond Lim, also formed their own Stranger Squad by dressing up as iconic characters such as Eleven, Will, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Nancy, Steve, Jonathan, Joyce, and Sheriff Hopper from the Stranger Things franchise, showcasing the deep-rooted love Malaysian fans have for the show.
Guests were also left speechless when they encountered Malaysian cosplayer, Saakira Izumi who attended the event dressed as The Demogorgon – the terrifying humanoid creature originating from the Upside Down. The talented Saakira who is an avid fan; created her own Demogorgon costume from scratch, specially for the screening.
Whilst Netflix often hosts various events around the globe, this is the first time that an event of this scale has been hosted right here in Malaysia. The screening offered an exclusive preview of the much awaited Stranger Things 3 to select audiences.
With the show coming back for a third season, fans worldwide are excited to see the newest developments with their favourite Stranger Squad in Hawkins, Indiana and where this new season will lead. Viewers can stream the Original series anytime, anywhere from its debut date on July 4th, 2019.
