Cory Aquino: The Housewife Who Led A Revolution
Premieres Sunday 10pm, 30 January 2011
Synopsis:
Cory Aquino: The Housewife Who Led a Revolution is the story of the Philippines’ most beloved leader.
Before 1986, the Philippines was suffering under the dictatorship of President Ferdinand Marcos. Pressured by the mounting discontent, Marcos called for snap elections.
He found himself running against an unqualified, unassuming widow of the martyred Ninoy Aquino Jr. People immediately connected to Cory’s simplicity and honesty, who looked up to her as a symbol of change. Despite having no political experience, Cory was able to unite the fractured opposition.
The snap elections, fraught with violence and fraud, resulted in a mass protest led by Cory Aquino. The wheels of People Power were a confluence of events that led to the ouster of Marcos and his family. For four days, Cory Aquino inspired a nation to end tyranny. The People Power Revolution is one of the most historic and celebrated events of democracy—being the first peaceful revolution in the world.
Cory’s revolutionary government immediately filled the vacated seat of the Marcos regime. The economy was in its state as it was during the war and the country was deep in poverty. Just barely keeping her head above water, Cory had to deal with the communist insurgency while trying to stave off seven coup attempts. She survived all attempts to unseat her and eventually endorsed the man who played a key role in quelling any attempts to takeover, Gen. Fidel V Ramos.
Cory’s most notable contribution as president was the new constitution that was approved and elected in record time. Throughout the rest of her life, Cory was going to be one of the most prominent champions of democracy.
