Join a grandeur as the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) presents a dose of Baroque music under the guidance of Finnish maestro Hannu Lintu on Saturday, 24 May 2008 at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, 25 May 2008 at 3.00 p.m. at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC.
The MPO will perform Schoenberg’s orchestration of Prelude And Fugue in E flat – ‘St Anne’ which was originally written for the organ by Johann Sebastian Bach. Next, the MPO will present ‘Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis’ composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams. It was premiered in Gloucester, England in 1910 and was revised twice before arriving at the current version which will be performed by the MPO.
To further appease the audience’s musical appetites is Symphony No.7 in C (Op.105) composed by Jean Sibelius in 1917 during the time when Finland was about to fall under the heel of Russian Imperialism. This work explores the ‘heroic, epic world of Man pitting himself against a largely hostile natural world’.
The MPO will also perform Violin Concerto (Op.15) written by Benjamin Britten in 1938 when he was in America. It incorporates elements of Spanish music and more poignantly his grief at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War which erupted in 1936.
Collaborating with the MPO to perform this work is English violin virtuoso Daniel Hope, making his debut on the DFP stage. Voted ‘Classical Performer 2001’ by London’s Evening Standard newspaper, he is renowned for his musical versatility and creativity. Having toured Europe and North America, he is dedicated to contemporary music and has made a total of eight award-winning recordings for Warner Classics.
