Host Andrea Fonseka brought up the level of anticipation to yet another notch with her welcome address. At the fashion gala, Dayang Nurfaizah threw the guests and media a spectacular opening performance by singing, ‘Loving You’.
Winnie Loo, Co-founder & Chief Creative Director of A Cut Above commented, “A Cut Above Fashion Gala 2010 intends to bring you lots of excitements and fulfilments. In fact, we want to throw a memorable fashion party to all the people who are present tonight. ‘Reflections’ is the theme of this fashion gala. Through this fashion gala, you may see hair-fashion from different decades and the future.”
As guests sipped on the free-flowing wine and beer, they previewed a hair fashion show, called ‘Roaring 20’s’. Young women’s fashion of the 1920s was both tend and a social statement, a breaking-off from the rigid Victorian way of life. These young, rebellious, middle-class women, labelled ‘flappers’ by older generations, did away with the corset and donned slinky knee-length dresses, which exposed their legs and arms. The hairstyle of the decade was a chin-length bob, of which there several popular variations.
The Ancient’s collection was created by A Cut Above Academy. Ancient life is full of inspirations; the land is thick and vast, while creatures are going on living on it. The land was fossilized and now improvised, reflecting cruel but beautiful life. Round and round forever, life has gone through all the tests from the nature. They run as if they will never do it late. Because they understand, they know how to appreciate, despite a moment of pain.
Glamorous 40s-60s’s, a collection very closed to Winnie’s heart and was personally combed and styled by her. As what Winnie always mentioned, “A true good hairstylist should be an all rounder, able to comb and create high couture up style and never be afraid to mould shapes into hair”. Here you can see the very elegant big high hair styles very much the mood of Ladies who lunch of the early years. The beehive was popular in the early to mid 60’s; this girl has a typical ‘Audrey Hepburn look’ and Winnie did it with a twist. In addition, curls were extremely popular and whether straight or curly, a woman’s hair always appeared to have voluminous waves even if the hair is styled up. The models channelled elegance and looking really fabulousness with every of the looks.

Tribute to MJ’s collection represents style of 70s to 90s. This collection was created to mesmerize the legend of the king of the pop star. The poignant lyricism and humanitarian manner Michael subscribed to in life reminds us that simple acts of kindness reap great rewards and that our gifts of compassion are truly meant to be shared amongst others in need. His sudden death does not mean that we have lost his dream, his vision. “Love, ladies and gentlemen, is the human family’s most precious legacy it’s richest bequest, its golden inheritance,” said Michael Jackson at Oxford University, March 2001. The collection of hair was about freedom, movement, frizz and dreadlocks and a touch of the hippie feeling with big bouffant frizz as the styles then was very much streets and easy hair.
Next, we had Let’s Go Gaga collection. Let’s Go Gaga collection was all about crazy looks, public spectacles and glamorous blonde hair. Lady Gaga, enigmatic performance artist has had outsized impact on the world of fashion. Like what she always mentioned to the media, “You must always remember, the most important fashion accessory is the condom.” In addition, with this collection, we wanted the audience to know hair can be created into whatever form and be still worn on the head if anyone have the guts to do so like Lady Gaga making waves out of being outrageous.
Shawn Lee, Malaysia’s number one beat boxer and also crowned the world’s 9th beat boxer rocked the stage with a couple of numbers that sounded like a audio system rolled in one tiny body.
Finally, yet importantly, rounding up the show was ‘Beyonce Live in Malaysia’ by Dayang Nurfaizah.
Guests and media were also pampered with goodies from various sponsors. A Cut Above Fashion Gala 2010 would not be a success without the kindness and support of the following sponsors:
