The opening ceremony was officiated today by Mr. Rimsky Yuen, Secretary for Justice of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, alongside Dr Peter Lam, Chairman of Hong Kong Tourism Board. HKTB shared its plans for the Malaysian market, which also includes a focus on Muslim-friendly tourism initiatives.
“Malaysia is one of our key source markets in the Southeast Asia region, which is why we are here today to showcase the very best of Hong Kong with diverse areas of appeal and relevant content to Malaysia’s multicultural society,” said Mr Anthony Lau.
MUSLIM-FRIENDLY HONG KONG
Hong Kong is listed as the 5th best non-Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) country for Muslim travellers . The city offers plenty of Halal-certified dining options, easy access to prayer spaces, and accommodation options with Halal-certified kitchens.
In line with the burgeoning Muslim travel sector and Hong Kong Live in Kuala Lumpur, HKTB launched its Muslim guidebook, Warna-Warni Destinasi Hong Kong featuring the latest happenings, festivals, must-visit attractions, restaurants and Muslim-friendly facilities in Hong Kong. There is also a dedicated page on DiscoverHongKong.com highlighting Muslim offerings
Mr. Lau added, “HKTB recognises that there is a need to create a hospitable environment for our Muslim travellers, and providing them with facilities and guidance so that they too can enjoy the delights of Hong Kong without worries.”
Celebrity power couple Awal Ashaari and Scha Alyahya as well as their daughter Lara Alana had the opportunity to visit Hong Kong recently, and shared their experience at the opening ceremony.
“Our experience in Hong Kong was just incredible; there were so many things to explore – whether you are travelling alone or with family. It is pretty easy to find Halal-certified restaurants and other Muslim-friendly places to eat in Hong Kong. We even got to try some of the best dim sum and local cuisine. As Hong Kong is a child-friendly destination, we also took Lara to Disneyland and Ocean Park which she really enjoyed. She was transformed into a princess and also learnt about the different animals and sea creatures from across the globe,” said Awal.
“I literally went wild shopping, especially for sneakers in Hong Kong! There were so many creative local designers and unique shops, and activities that you can do to up your style game. Some of the more memorable activities we did were when Awal and I handmade our own silver couple rings at PMQ in Old Town Central, and shopped for fabrics for my next collection in Sham Shui Po. We got to see Hong Kong from different angles by using public transport such as the MTR and the Ding Ding tram. We also rode the cable car in Ngong Ping which has a glass floor, giving us an amazing 360 view of the mountains and ocean,” said Scha reminiscing.
Also making an appearance and sharing her love of Hong Kong was popular social media influencer Ann Qi, who took her followers along with her via social media.
“Hong Kong is vibrant and alive with its own unique culture and vibe. There was just so much to do! And eat! In the day I explored Old Town Central which is packed with unique antique and hipster shops, heritage buildings and cool graffiti for Instagram OOTDs! You can get amazing food at streetside cha chaan tengs, or what we know here as kopitiams, all around the city. I would also recommend café hopping in Hong Kong. I visited the world’s first-ever Starbucks to incorporate a Bing Sutt corner, which is a traditional coffee house setting with a nostalgic retro style at the Duddell Street outlet. At night, the entire city lights up and the view of the skyline is just breathtaking,” said Ann Qi.
