The world opera is a world of fat shouting men – and Luciano Pavarotti, who has died aged 71, was the fattest and shoutiest of them all.
This, along with the fact that he sung the theme-tune to the 1990 World Cup, meant that Luciano Pavarotti was the best-known opera singer in the world, and now he’s dead. Luciano Pavarotti’s manager confirmed early this morning that he had lost his battle with pancreatic cancer, a fight which saw him go through five rounds of chemotherapy in the last year alone. Tributes are already pouring in from friends and admirers of Luciano Pavarotti, and they all share the same sad sentiment that the world will be a worse place without Pavarotti in it. And a quieter place. And probably a little bit lighter.
Luciano Pavarotti has died aged 71 in his Italian home town of Modena, it’s been announced. Famous for popularising opera like no other man before him, for being hugely overweight and for annoying Charlotte Church, Luciana Pavarotti was the first opera singer to perform on Saturday Night Live, the first opera singer to perform with U2 and one of the only opera singers to be able to draw a crowd of half a million to his concerts, as he did in New York’s Central Park in 1993.
Early last year, however, Luciano Pavarotti was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer – an event which meant that Pavarotti would never perform, or even be seen in public, again. But even without making public appearances, Luciano Pavarotti still managed to stamp his presence all across the world. A waxwork Pavarotti was a guest of honour at the recent waxwork Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie wedding, along with Frank Sinatra and John Wayne, and last year Luciano Pavarotti gained perhaps the highest accolade known to man – being namechecked in the debut Kevin Federline Single Y’All Ain’t Ready as a slang term for ‘paparazzi’. We can only dream of recognition that huge.
Stunning performance James Brown & Pavarotti. We’ll miss him.
Sadly, though, as BBC News reports, Luciano Pavarotti has lost his battle with cancer:
Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti has died at his home in the northern city of Modena, his manager has announced. The singer, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year, was 71… Pavarotti had cancer surgery in July 2006 in New York, five months after his last performance. He had not made any public appearances since then. He underwent five bouts of chemotherapy in the past year, and was admitted to hospital with a fever on 8 August. He was released two weeks later following diagnostic tests… Although his wife had told papers he was fighting like a lion, it had been feared that he had gone home to die among his friends and family.
The death of Luciano Pavarotti has deprived the world of one of the greatest-ever tenors, and some of the 100 million albums that Pavarotti sold in his lifetime will no doubt be pulled out today and given a commemorative spin. We just wish that Pavarotti’s music didn’t remind us of David Platt so much.
