HISTORY™ Premieres Emmy Favourite ‘The Kennedys’
Lavish US$25 million miniseries a first for the channel
KUALA LUMPUR – HISTORY™ marks its first foray into original scripted content with the debut of The Kennedys, an intriguing miniseries that examines the lives, ambitions and secrets of America’s most illustrious political family. Nominated for 10 Prime Time Emmy Awards including Outstanding Miniseries, Outstanding Lead Actor and Outstanding Supporting Actor, the series premieres in Asia on Monday, 19 September 2011, 9pm (Astro Channel 555).
Filmed in eight parts with a lavish US$25 million production budget, The Kennedys features an ensemble cast of Greg Kinnear, Katie Holmes, Barry Pepper and Tom Wilkinson. Helming the cast is the team behind the television series 24, comprising producer Joel Surlow, director Jon Cassar and writer Stephen Kronish.
The Kennedys presents the story of the Kennedy clan as it has never been told before. From their political triumphs to their personal tragedies, viewers will relive every moment from John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s (JFK) campaign in the 1960 Presidential Elections to the assassination of his brother Robert Francis Kennedy (RFK) prior to the 1968 Elections.
Academy Award nominee Kinnear (As Good as it Gets) plays JFK as the President handles the twin crises of the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Holmes channels First Lady and fashion icon Jacqueline Kennedy as she struggles with JFK’s philandering ways. Golden Globe, Primetime Emmy and BAFTA winner and twice Academy Award nominated Wilkinson (John Adams, The Full Monty, Michael Clayton) delivers a masterful performance as Joseph Patrick Kennedy Sr, the patriarch of the family and power behind the throne who strikes deals with the underworld to get his son elected into office. Rounding up the cast is Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan) who plays JFK’s younger brother, Attorney General and close advisor, RFK.
The Kennedys has broken viewership records for the highest-rated movie or special presentation on History Channel in Canada and ReelzChannel in the United States of America. The miniseries has also broken audience records in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Belgium and Ireland. Among critics, The New York Post called the series “without a doubt one of the best, most riveting, historically accurate dramas about a time and place in American history that has ever been done for TV”.
