Synopsis
Ah Min, a 23-year-old budding fashion photographer, visits her grandmother’s photo studio one day before it shuts for good. There, she discovers four old photographs. Intrigued by the people in the photos, Ah Min embarks on a journey to find out who they are. Her first stop – an old friend of her grandmother’s, Ah Meng, who reveals through four unforgettable stories that the people in the photos all worked and played at the legendary Great World Amusement Park once upon a time.
Spanning the 1940s to the present day, It’s A Great Great World is a valentine to the colorful amusement park that used to be situated along Kim Seng Road. Each of the four stories recounted by Ah Meng revolves around iconic Great World landmarks – the Sky Theatre, the Ghost Train, the Flamingo Niteclub and the Wing Choon Yuen Restaurant.
Through Ah Meng, we relive the tale of Ah Boo, a clown in a children’s show, who fights against all odds to have his picture taken with Elizabeth Taylor when she visits the Sky Theatre in 1958 to attend the premiere of Around The World In 80 Days.
We also take a ride on board Great World’s infamous Ghost Train with Mei Juan, the fiesty operator of a shooting gallery, and Ah Leong, a loutish oil seller from Malaysia, when the two meet in Great World in 1965 and fall in love.
Besides clowns and lovebirds, It’s A Great Great World also features Rose, the faded diva of the Flamingo Niteclub, who has to battle a trio of younger singers, a demanding manager and an old flame to keep her spot in the limelight as customers flock to the Flamingo in 1975.
Last but not least, we enter the world of the popular Wing Choon Yuen Restaurant, where the outcome of a wedding dinner in 1941 hangs in the balance when the chaotic kitchen staff stumbles upon an awful secret they must keep away from the customers.
Moved by Ah Meng’s stories about Great World, Ah Min returns to her grandmother’s photo studio with a newfound appreciation for the past. Realizing that the studio is her grandmother’s lifework as well as the repository of many cherished memories, Ah Min decides to keep it running and to follow in her grandmother’s footsteps.
