ITALIAN TREASURES AT DEWAN FILHARMONIK PETRONAS
Since its inception a decade ago, for the first time ever, Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) will collaborate with the Embassy of Italy to Malaysia to present an exhibition of priceless Italian string instruments called Italian Treasures and a special concert by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) chamber ensemble on Thursday, 19 June 08 at 6.30 p.m.
DFP, as the nation’s premier hub for classical music, and the Embassy of Italy are organizing the exhibition of precious string instruments from both ancient and modern Italian school of violin-making. The instruments on display are selected from the greatest Italian masters including Antonio Stradivarius, Ferdinand Gagliano and Gasparo da Salo, some of which are over 300 years old.
The exhibition is open to the public from 13 June 08 to 20 June 08 from 11.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. at the DFP promenade and foyer. Admission is free and members of the public can bring their own string instruments for evaluation by string experts and restorers, Virgoletti & Sakamoto.
Through this exhibition, the Embassy of Italy to Malaysia and DFP hope to forge a closer working relationship between the two entities in strengthening cultural and academic ties.
The exhibition is sponsored by Finmeccanica, an Italian leading high technology firm which ranks third in Europe in the aerospace, defence and security sectors. This year, Finmeccanica celebrates its 60th year of activities since its foundation.
For the concert on 19 June 08, music lovers and arts aficionados will be treated to the soothing sounds of the Italian Treasures when four MPO musicians perform on the finest Italian string instruments. Violinists Markus Gundermann and Daniella Rodnite, violist Giovanni Passini and cellist Simon Cobcroft will entice audiences with ‘Chrysanthemums’ composed by Giacomo Pucini, ‘String Quartet in E minor’ by Giuseppe Verdi, and ‘Luisa Miller – excerpts arranged for string quartet’ also by Giuseppe Verdi and arranged by Emanuele Muzio.
The chamber concert is expected to last for an hour, and this will be followed by a demonstration of violin-making at 8.00 p.m. Tickets are priced at RM10 for all seating categories. Bookings can be made by calling the Box Office at 03-2051 7007 or fax 03-2051 7077 or email [email protected]
