AIRASIA NAMED FASTEST GROWING AIRLINE FOR CARGO
Award underlines AirAsia’s success in growing its cargo operations in China
AirAsia bagged the Fastest Growing Foreign Airline for Cargo award from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. The airline received the award in a ceremony in Guangzhou which was attended by business leaders from the airline industry.
Sathis Manoharen, Regional Head of Cargo, AirAsia, said, “We are proud to be recognized in China, which is a paramount market to us. AirAsia has seen a tremendous growth in its cargo operations in this market. We are here to continue to meet the huge demand for cargo services between China and ASEAN, where AirAsia is based, and beyond.”
AirAsia identifies cargo as a major revenue-generating channel and a huge contributor to its ancillary income. The airline is optimizing the potential of its otherwise empty belly space to bring in cash by offering cargo services at rates considerably lower than its competitors’ and by tapping AirAsia’s extensive network and flight frequencies to reach more destinations and achieve faster delivery time.
AirAsia is strengthening cargo operations in part to protect its bottom line against fluctuations in fuel prices.
Asia’s largest low-cost carrier has been tying up with more cargo agents and large export-import firms in the markets that AirAsia flies to. It is also reaching markets beyond its current route network through other airlines with which AirAsia has special pro-rate agreements. These major airlines extend AirAsia’s reach to more cities in East Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
AirAsia’s most popular cargo are perishables, machine and car parts, electronics, shoes and apparels.
