Program synopsis:
This series presents the harrowing stories of Americans abroad and their real life nightmares on foreign soil. These dramatic stories will be told firsthand through survivor interviews, compelling on-location imagery, news footage and dramatic re-enactments, in our three presentations: Journey Through Torture: India, Guerrillas In Their Midst: Uganda and Climb To Hell: Kyrgystan.
Journey Through Torture: India, 10 Nov
The world’s largest democracy and home to over 1-billion people from 7 ethnic groups speaking 18 languages, India is embroiled in a colossal class struggle–from which rose a homegrown Mafia. We follow the unlucky footsteps of California medical student Marcus Villagren, who, while studying pediatrics in India, was kidnapped. When he couldn’t meet the Mafia’s ransom demands, Marcus was turned over to a corrupt legal system and sentenced to prison–for a “crime” of which he has no knowledge.
Guerillas In Their Midst: Uganda, 17 Nov
Americans who faced terror attacks while working, living, or vacationing in exotic areas of the world, tell harrowing survival tales in an incisive series shot like a gripping movie. Step into the heart of darkness as ordinary people face extraordinary peril in stories ripped from the headlines. In 1999, safari guide Mark Ross and 16 Westerners are taken hostage in Uganda while observing mountain gorillas. Mark, who speaks Swahili, urgently bargains for their safety–but not all will live.
Climb To Hell: Kyrgzstan, 24 Nov
In August 2000, four American climbers in Kyrgyzstan were taken hostage by the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. While marching north, the rebels were surrounded by the Kyrgyz military and a firefight ensued. On the run again, the hostages waited for a chance to turn the tables on the remaining captors. On a rocky mountain, they made a deadly decision to gain freedom-a decision that haunts them yet. The four climbers–Beth Rodden, Tommy Caldwell, John Dickey, and Jason Smith–recount their ordeal.
The program is also available in Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin subtitle.
